ComfortPillow
Several weeks ago I was contacted by a marketing agency and asked to participate in a product review of Tempur-Pedic pillows. It was a simple offer. They would send me two free pillows, The ComfortPillow and The NeckPillow, and all I had to do in turn was to review my experience using them on my blog. Sign me up!
But what about the fumes?
Actually before I agreed to participate, I had one major concern I needed addressed; do Tempur-Pedic pillows release any fumes? I have heard reports to that affect about “memory” material but had no direct knowledge. As most of us with Fibromyalgia know, chemical sensitivity is a real issue. Sometimes just being exposed to a smell or inhaling a toxin can debilitate us. Victoria, the lovely marketing agent who contacted me got right on it and quickly got back to me with this response from Tempur-Pedic:
Our mattresses and pillows contain polyurethane foam which is chemically similar to other polyurethane foams utilized in many common products in everyday use including furniture, bedding, carpet underlay, packaging, and automobile seats. Like foams in other products, those used in a Tempur-Pedic® product do experience some levels of “off-gassing” and typically an odor will be associated with the same. The odor will be strongest immediately after manufacture, and will dissipate over time. Upon delivery of your mattress/pillow, you may notice a slight odor which is left over from our manufacturing process; however, this is not harmful to you. We recommend reviewing our “Use and Care Instructions” for more information. Tempur-Pedic® follows a variety of industry standards and conducts proprietary tests to ensure that our products adhere to all local, state and federal health regulations.
I was satisfied with the response so we moved forward and in a few short days I had my two new pillows.
The Tempur-Pedic NeckPillow

NeckPillow
I have been sleeping with a neck pillow for years, so was excited to try the Tempur-Pedic NeckPillow first. There definitely was an odor upon removing the pillow from the packaging, but by the time I laid down on it that evening it was nearly gone, and not strong enough to affect me. By the second evening it had completely disappated.
My first reaction to the pillow was that it is not as soft as I was expecting or used to; there is a firm quality to the material. Although firm, it was immediately comfortable for me. My head was being cradled and supported in all the right places. I did not have to adjust it several times like I did with my previous pillow, because the NeckPillow was adjusting to me.
Patented Construction
Our patented integration of multiple layers of TEMPUR material with different base materials provides a variable balance of pressure-relieving comfort and therapeutic support. The top TEMPUR Comfort Layer (A) is a softer formula that reacts immediately to your body temperature and weight. As you sink further into the mattress, the TEMPUR Support Layer (B) completely absorbs and distributes your body weight and supports your spine in perfect alignment. The typical AirFlow System™ Base Layer© provides a supportive base for the TEMPUR components and increases the flow of air to maximize comfort and responsiveness.
I slept very well on it that first night and on many nights since. My neck is my chronic hotspot for pain. After several concussions and damage from severe whiplash, it aches regularly. Usually the mornings are the worst. I can unequivocally say that my neck aches less in the mornings since I began sleeping with the NeckPillow. It has not been a cure for the restless sleep I suffer due to fibromyalgia, but it is an improvement.
The Tempur-Pedic ComfortPillow

BodyPillow
Next I tried the ComfortPillow which is a more traditional pillow. My experience was similar. It too cradled my head, and even though I am used to a neck pillow, I found the ComfortPillow just as comfortable. Hmmm, maybe that is where they got the name! I did not use it as my head pillow for long, but I continue to sleep with it as a side pillow. I rest it against my chest and between my arms to help keep my body aligned – similar to this model sleeping with a Tempur-Pedic body pillow, except my hair usually doesn’t lay that beautifully and I often have a scowl on my face, but otherwise, just like that! It is a restorative way to sleep and minimizes morning pain and stiffness.
Seriously though, I am very happy with both pillows. They are definite upgrades from what I was previously using. Thank you Victoria at Rocket XL for asking me to participate and to Tempur-Pedic for my two new pillows. Sleep well!
Oh, I would love to have either or both of those pillows, they sound wonderful! Maybe that’s what I will ask for on my next birthday 🙂
Oh you sleep in a blue silk nightie do you? LOL I have one of the neck pillows and it had the opposite effect on me. I had serious neck kinks and pain from sleeping on it. I guess I am just too used to regular pillows? I sleep with pillows between my knees and arms too, it does help a lot! Glad you found them to be helpful 😀
I have always been a feather pillow kinda gal myself. About 3 weeks ago we finally replaced our awful mattress. We went to Costco and got their Nova Foam NutraTemp memory foam mattress. BEST thing I think we have ever done for my Fibro. My hips haven’t hurt since we got it, and my hips used to hurt constantly, to the point that I would limp around all day long. After experiencing how much this has benefited me, and reading your review, I am wondering if I wouldn’t be better with a new pillow too!
thanks for the review!
That is so funny, I had people peddling pillows contact me a few months ago. Since I had a disaster with The Tempur-Pedic NeckPillow, I turned them down. I’m glad that you liked their pillows though. Very cool.
Between my Fibromyalgia, MyoFascial Pain Syndrome, severe arthritis, Dysautonomia, and GERD, I have a hard time sleeping. I found major relief in a $40 pillow I bought at Mayo Clinic. It’s a wedge, and since I also have Dysautonomia, I sleep halfway down at the four inch mark. Cured my coughing and most of my aches and pains are pretty good when I use it.
How does the neck pillow work? Do you sleep on the small side or tall side?
Dannette, I wake up with headaches (have migraines anyways) and often wondered if it was my pillows. I have tried different cheap pillows. You didn’t mention a price or how to purchase the Tempor-Pedic. Got any comments?
Thanks, Anna
I tried the neck pillow years ago, and found that it roasted me. Anywhere my body touched it, I poured sweat, and it caused my whole body to be uncomfortably warm as well. I got tired of waking up and having to wash the sweat out of my hair every morning, so I discontinued use after about a week.
I’ve heard that some others have also had this issue, so if you decide to try it, be aware that this can happen. I wish I didn’t have that reaction, tho, because it did help the pain and stiffness in my neck when I slept on it, and I can’t use other types of foam neck pillows because they don’t conform to the shape of my neck.
I’ve used a Tempurpedic pillow on and off for several years. Sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn’t. One thing I found with this material — when you live up north and you keep your bedroom cool at night 60-65 in the winter months, the pillow gets harder which contributes to a more painful sleep for me with my Fibromyalgia. Works better in summer weather.
I LOVE this pillow. I’ve had it about a month now. I DID go back to my old down pillow for about four nights about a week after having the Tempurpedic Pillow. Wanted to see if there REALLY was a difference.
There was! I woke up three or four times three of the four nights I slept on the old pillow. With the Tempurpedic I may get up once but once I’m back in bed it’s only a matter of moments before I’m asleep again. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but before I had the new pillow around three in the afternoon, EVERY afternoon I’d feel like I needed a nap. I no longer feel that. Can’t believe a pillow would make that big a difference, but it is the ONLY change I’ve made to my sleeping patterns.
The pillow is VERY firm. Wasn’t sure how I’d feel about that, but It does give a bit. It’s funny (ha-ha) but I actually look forward to going to bed now. If you can afford the pillow, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
I’m SOOOOO happy that I spent the money to get it. I think it has made a HUGE difference in my sleep patterns. Heck, if I don’t get tired in the middle of the day now, that’s gotta say something, doesn’t it?
I purchased 2 pillows tempurpedic great to sleep on, did any one get a allergic reaction on the face with these pillows.
I am a fibromyalgia suffer my neck and upper back are sensitive area and I suffer from migraines my husband bought me the neck pillow the first night was awful but I said I would give it one more night last night was my second and last It was horrible sleeping on that pillow its hard and stiff as a fibromyalgia suffer I am sensitive to touch this pillow was just not cutting it I’m in so much pain I have a migraine my neck hurts my upper back. I was hoping this was the one…
I am sorry that has been your experience Kathy. I hope you can find a comfortable pillow soon to ease some of your neck pain. I am still using my pillow with great results, but I also attribute my nighttime comfort to the therapeutic neck and shoulder exercises I do regularly as part of my yoga practice. They help my pain and ability to sleep very much, in conjunction with a good pillow that suits my needs. Best wishes to you that you find what brings you relief soon!
